We here at COOL’EH have begun to suspect that the arduous process of naming an indie rock band is beginning to take a toll on the genre as a whole. Unlike the halcyon days of 2004 when you could simply slap a “The” in front of a noun and be done with it, or the period between 2005 and 2006 when all you needed was an animal name and some onomatopoeia…now bands are faced with a process so complex it leaves little time for actual practicing [see Department of Eagles]. One can only guess at the number of would-be great bands who break up simply because they cannot all agree on something suitably incongruous, ironic and vaguely insipid. This is where we have decided to step in and do our part to keep this vital genre from disintegrating under the crushing weight of liberal arts school pretension and faux nostalgia laced with self-congratulatory gheyness. Now aspiring bands can come to COOL’EH and are just a click away from a totally awesome name that manages to retain an air of “we worked on this for six months before just picking words with the same first letter out of a hat”. We do this, not because we have a patent on the COOL’EH INDIE ROCK BAND GENERATOR© and not because we are bitter, failed artists jealous of the success of others. We do this because we believe that once freed from the yoke of an antiquated naming process, bands will be able to fully throw themselves into the art of publicity photos and electronic press kits. We do this, for those about to rock.
