At COOL’EH, we do things right. When we decide to do a Best Of issue, we don’t put it out till the next year. Why? Well suppose the album of the year comes out on December 31st, what then?  Someone has to be responsible, someone has to wait till Christmas morning to open the presents, someone has to put their finger in the dike for the whole night…and that someone is COOL’EH. So here is the ultimate Best of 2008 Issue, and believe me when I tell you, we were thorough. We’ve got interviews with Brian Lehrer, Santogold, Max B, Padma Newsome, Diamond Galas, The P Brothers, NO AGE and 100 Bullets’ creator Brian Azzarello. Plus Three Sheets’ Zane Lamprey on drinking after midnight, B-Real on why O.G. Kush was the best marijuana strain in ’08 and our very own Stereolabrat on why you should not dress yourself anymore. Round that out with Somali piracy, Biofuels, Bernie Mac, the L.A. Lakers, Hulu.com, Jay Electronica, The merits of fur as a fashion statement, Rotisserie Peruvian Chicken, Def Jam Records and a brand new podcast. 2008 is over and it is only right that COOL’EH has the last word.

Words KOBI ANNOBIL

SHOTS FIRED

“Picture the scene - you're sitting in a bar, minding your own business, pounding some Coronas when a guy in his late sixties approaches you - he's wearing a black suit and a no-nonsense expression. He knows your name before you even think to introduce yourself and then he hits you with the bombshell. Here's a gun with 100 untraceable bullets and irrefutable evidence that someone has wronged you…” More...

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER

“For the past two nights of February 14th, I’ve stood feet from the stage at the Knitting Factory to witness her annual rendition of psychotic love songs; the famed “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre”. Over the phone, would she be the solemn, solitary singer I had seen one year, or the sardonic, audience-ribbing smart-mouth I'd seen the next…”. More...

WHITE GOLD

“As the quest for the Next Great Sound continues, it appears that music genres are becoming obsolete. More and more, the categorization of music has stopped having any real meaning and is just something to make music journalists and marketing execs jobs easier. After all, what does attempting to categorize contemporary artists like MIA, Flying Lotus, Aloe Blacc or Animal Collective really tell you about their music?”. More...

Best of 2008

Interview with BRIAN LEHRER
Words D. TSOMONDO

THE LIVING CITY

“Brian Lehrer is the man. Or more specifically, Brian Lehrer is the reason that I still turn on this antique device in my room commonly known as the radio. But you don’t have to take my word for it, his two-hour show on WNYC, New York’s public radio station, has won boatloads of awards [including a 2007 Peabody].”. More...

words D. TSOMONDO

THE SEVENTH SEA

“In 2008, Somalia once again attracted worldwide attention, not for the plight of its people but the growth of piracy originating from the Somali coastline. The same thing that made the Horn of Africa such a crucial piece in the Cold War chess match was now allowing a homegrown Somali industry to go “global”. Somali pirates were ahead of the curve in 2008, snagging bigger ships, with more valuable cargo, than ever before…”. More...

CAN’T TOUCH THIS

“It’s been a nice year,” No Age’s Randy Randall tells me through a crackling phone line. He and Dean Spunt are back in L.A. after touring heavy in support of their second LP, Nouns, which was among the more critically acclaimed records of 2008.”. More...

“As far as weed goes, 2008 was The Year of The Kush. No other cannabis strain was as prized, as hard to find or as mythologized as this remarkable scion of two fantastic strains, Chem/Dawg and Sour Diesel.”. More...

“According to their press release, Three Sheets is "an international travelogue/pub-crawl television series”. I usually describe it to the uninitiated as “a show where some guy drinks so much, you are watching half in hope of seeing the exact moment when his liver fails.”. More...

INDIE ROCK BAND NAME GENRATOR©

words: RIPPY RIPPERTON

We here at COOL’EH have begun to suspect that the process of naming an indie rock band is beginning to take a toll on the music as a whole. Unlike the halcyon days of 2004 when you could simply slap a “The” in front of a noun and be done with it, or the period between 2005 and 2006 when all you needed was an animal name and some onomatopoeia. Words STEREOLABRAT

YOU LOOK LIKE TURDS

“Look at this shit. Everything on this list is Lance Bass. The worst part is that Lance Bass wouldn't even wear half this shit because it's too gay for him. Yes. Too fucking gay for Lance fucking Bass.”. More...

Words C. BENZ

THE YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY

“The tranquility of a gorgeous day in bustling upscale Monterrey is shattered when gunmen burst into the Lozano Jewelry store and empty assault rifles into the establishment. Among the four dead were an unarmed security guard and the assassin’s main target, an off-duty police officer. The killers make no attempt to steal anything; they are assassins, soldiers in a Mexican narco-insurgency that threatens the very viability of the state.”. More...

Words M. ADEOFF

THE PERFECT SHITSTORM

“A few weeks ago there was a Saturday New York Times cover story about how Maryland wasn’t doing a great job of handling all of the chicken shit (650 million pounds per year) it’s massive chicken farming industry was excreting. “These mountains of manure have become a liability because the excess is washing into the Chesapeake Bay, one of the nation’s most polluted estuaries, and further worsening the plight of the fishermen who ply its waters...”. On Friday night, I had the pleasure of attending the NY Premiere of The Sky Crawlers, the latest from director Mamoru Oshii. At just over 2 hours in length, this slow-cooked animated feature takes us to a strange and vaguely familiar place that seems to be neither the past nor the future. More…
